In its fifth year as part of London Design Festival, founding member SMUG is proud to announce Islington Design District’s activities for the 2017 Festival. Cementing its place as a must-visit official design district, IDD’s members are putting on an inspiring programme of activities for the Festival from 16th – 24th September.

Previous events

The Islington Design District is a collaborative event made up of several design shops and showrooms across Islington and includes Aria, CTO Lighting, Present & Correct, SMUG, Timorous Beasties and twentytwentyone. This year the IDD is excited to welcome ‘Graduated’ - The first showcase of emerging Product and Furniture designers from Kingston University.

Each Partner will celebrate the Festival by holding exhibitions, putting on one-off activities, as well as unveiling new products and exclusives especially for LDF. Highlights include; Stationery purveyor Present & Correct’s exhibition, Cliptomania – a typology of 150 clips - a gripping celebration of form and function; and SMUG founder Lizzie Evans’s launch of her podcast ‘How to Curate Your Life – Work Life Balance for the Creative Entrepreneur’.

Workshops, seminars and expert panels will be hosted upstairs at SMUG throughout the Festival to celebrate the launch of the podcast featuring several of the creative and entrepreneurial friends of SMUG interviewed on the podcast. Evans will also launch a new Lizzie for SMUG Pattern Collection.

P L A N T P O T returns for 2017 – The hugely popular and very Instagramable exhibition of one-off designed plant pots upstairs at SMUG is back for 2017. Working with 12 different designers each year, Evans plants up and curates the pots, displaying them on the, now well known, birch ply shelves with mint coloured metal brackets, upstairs at SMUG. On Saturday 23rd you’ll be able to paint and take away your own patterned plant pot with the expert help of Hello Marilu who’ll be running walk in workshops all day at SMUG.

Aria takes furniture design to another dimension in an interstellar collaboration with Ligne Roset & 17 Patterns. The installation will see these two innovative brands merge as they transform the Aria showroom with contemporary design and atmospheric patterns. twentytwentyone host an exhibition of classic and contemporary designs reflecting a creative mix of materials, construction and form. New designs by Michael Anastassiades and Richard Woods/Sebastian Wrong, with relaunched historical designs by Robin Day and Friso Kramer/Wim Rietveld.

IDD’s local restaurants and bars will be joining in with the LDF celebration and offering one-off deals and discounts especially for the Festival. Islington Green's Bellanger is delighted to offer a complimentary glass of Crémant d’Alsace or Meteor beer accompanied by a selection of Tartes Flambées Alsaciennes, for Islington Design District patrons when dining a la Carte upon presentation of the Islington Design District map. CAFÉ SMUG will be offering a free coffee with every pastry purchased to those with the IDD map.

Join the IDD partners for their late night opening on Tuesday 19th September for a whole host of creative activities, ending with the official IDD for LDF launch party in the SMUG shop and yard from 7-9pm.

The SMUG shop will be open throughout the Festival for shoppers and browsers alike with SMUG’s eclectic mix of homeware, stationery, plants and kitchenware. CAFÉ SMUG will be open every day as a hub for IDD, serving delicious barista made coffee from Ozone and sumptuous pastries from The Dusty Knuckle. Free wifi will also be provided for design hunters seeking to snap and hashtag their favourite IDD products and discoveries.
